Gifting Items - Your Thoughts?

Hey, Linda here from Lansing, Michigan. I'm just curious about what gift items some of you have gotten already, or are thinking about? I'm sort of still perplexed. I have gone to a local store "Michigania" that has lots of nice items. There is an AWESOME coffee table book, however that would get a bit heavy! There are some nice engraved pen/pencil sets with our local flower/bird, etc, there are also nice ceramic trivets for serving hot food on, nice hostessing gift I suppose. I'd love to hear some other ideas? Are nicer state specific coffee/tea mugs a good idea? Or will that be too little?

What are some thoughts on gifts for the children/students? I have heard pens/pencils....but does that mean going to Staples and buying those things? Or should be find special ones? Maybe I'm overthinking the whole thing.....love to hear others thoughts.
cheers,
linda

  1. Hello,
I've been having a lot of trouble with finding appropriate "NYC" gifts. I went to B & N and bought a couple books about NYC. The books are HEAVY, which is problematic.
I also bought stickers for students, but I'm not happy with this. I only bought them because my suitcase is quite heavy already.
I wish I could bring FOOD items but that's impossible...

  2. Hi Ms. Mondol,

For the kids' gifts, I went on to Oriental Trading and got pencils, erasers, sharpeners, etc. I'm also a bit perplexed about the adult gifts. I have bought one pen and pencil set. I really didn't want to get a book about Florida that weighs too much, but I'm still looking...

  3. The state-specific stuff is always good...if you can find light picture books with a lot of local wilderness shots and city scenes, those are great for a few people...but as you will be traveling around it would be difficult to bring enough. Nicer pen sets are also a good idea for adults. I would say skip the coffee mugs for two reasons: they are heavy and can break, and people in India don't generally drink coffee or tea out of large mugs as we do here. You'll see this when you travel, but mostly they use very small tea service sets.

  4. Thanks so much for the guidance. I'll definitely skip the mugs...I was leaning that way. I'll look some more places for the books. The Oriental Trading company was a good idea for bulk purchase...guess it's a bit late for that now. I assume the schools that we're visiting with be in session. So the items we're bringing for children would be for classroom set, so each child gets it right?

  5. Hi all, I would agree that pen sets or even just pens with some logo on them are great. Plain pens (i.e. Staples type) are available everywhere and so have no specific value. Something that says "I heart NY" is going to be unique.

  6. Are the children in India familiar with Disney World and Disney characters? I think I saw this posted as a "yes" somewhere previously . . . just checking. So would Disney character items be appropriate for kids? I have 3 children's "Atlas of the United States" books, 2 "A is for America" alphabet books, several copies of "Seashore" since I'm from Florida. I also purchased 15 reusable bags with the recycling logo for us to pool our items into one "gift bag" for schools, etc.

  7. I was able to get some fun pens from my school with the school mascot and found some Philadelphia pencils at the Constitution Center. Also have some DVD's of famous speeches and a couple of Liberty Bells from same source. Met an Indian man in the gift shop who nixed one of my choices but loved the Liberty Bells, which I never would have chosen. Also have a few NYC t shirts (hope I'm not stepping on the toes of our NYC participants, but I think we'll be pooling gifts, anyway.

  8. Sounds like we'll be doing well...I wound up with three nice books with general Michigan photographs (soft cover) and two wooden engraved pens in a engraved boxes as the nicer gifts. Then for a classroom vs. individual children a couple of "memory" games with photos of Michigan and three decks of playing cards with Michigan themes....I might wait on purchasing any more till we're in Madison and have a "group think" on the subject...?
